Since it was first announced, fans have been clamoring for some glimpse of the upcoming live-action version of Disney’s Mulan. Yet even as we were introduced to an abundance of live-action Disney remakes via cast announcements and trailers, the studio remained tight-lipped on any information regarding our favorite warrior princess. Thankfully, the wait is finally over, as Disney tweeted out a teaser image showing Chinese-American actress Liu Yifei (The Forbidden Kingdom) suited up as the Disney heroine to announce that production had begun on the highly-anticipated film.
According to Entertainment Weekly, Liu Yifei was chosen for the role after a year of searching for the right actress. In actuality, that perhaps explains a lot about why things surrounding this film have felt so much more silent. One can imagine that it’s not hard to start doing press for The Lion King when Beyonce and Donald Glover have already signed on. That shouldn’t suggest that the Mulan cast isn’t impressive as well. Yifei will start alongside the likes of Donnie Yen (Ip Man, Rogue One), Yoson An (The Meg), and Jet Li (Romeo Must Die, The Expendables).

The movie will follow the story of Hua Mulan, the oldest daughter of a famous warrior, who poses as a man to fight in her father’s stead one he becomes too old to participate in a battle against the oncoming Hun invasion of China. As the only Asian Disney princess, the character of Mulan is extremely close to people’s hearts. Beyond that, the film is about a woman being brave enough to challenge gender norms by posing as a man and fighting in a bloody war for her country during China’s Han dynasty. Mulan is, simply put, a vital piece of cinema, and well, very 2018 as well.
Mulan will hit theatres in March 2020
