Over the past year, Gillette has developed a reputation for creating ads that resonate with viewers thanks to their emotional honesty and powerful message. And now, the shaving brand has delivered again, as their latest commercial shows a father teaching his transgender son to shave for the first time.
The ad begins with Samson Bonkeabantu Brown, a transgender activist from Toronto, discussing his transition on his couch with his father next to him.
“Growing up, I was always trying to figure out what kind of man I wanted to become,” Samson says. “I always knew I was different. I didn’t know there was a term for the type of person that I was.”
Next, Samson is standing in front of a bathroom mirror with a razor in his hand while he’s discussing shaving techniques with his dad. Samson then begins to shave for the first time and his dad offers up some simple but important advice for his son.
“Now don’t be scared,” Brown’s father says. “Shaving is about being confident.”
Whenever, wherever, however it happens – your first shave is special.

The ad has quickly gone viral, as it has been viewed over a million times in less than a week and has received an overwhelmingly positive response from viewers. Corey Manuel, a spokesperson for Gillette, said the company supports “everyone in their journey to looking, feeling and acting their best every day.”
“Gender conversations are happening all around us and we believe brands play a role in influencing culture and have a responsibility to use their voice to champion issues of great relevance to both the brand and our customers,” Manuel said in a statement.
