Michael Ketterer sounded more than a little nervous before his audition on America’s Got Talent. Once he started singing the Bee Gees’ “To Love Somebody,” however, it didn’t take long for the butterflies to fly. The judges were immediately blown away by his remarkable voice. So blown away in fact, that notoriously ruthless critic Simon Cowell slammed the coveted golden buzzer and automatically pushed Ketterer thr0ugh to the next round of the competition.
And that says a lot. Each judge is only allowed to use the golden buzzer once per season. That’s it, one time. And Cowell used his on Ketterer, whose wife and six children were standing backstage to greet him after the performance. Ketterer acknowledged that he auditioned for the show as a teaching moment for his kids, all of whom came out of foster care. If dad can pursue his dream, so can they.
“When you’re surviving, you can’t dream. And that has been one of the most rewarding things, is providing them with a home and a safe environment, where they’re free to dream,” Ketterer said. “And so I’m here because I want to show them that if their dad can live out his dreams, then nothing is impossible for them.”
While receiving the prized golden buzzer is a rare event, this isn’t the first time Cowell has chosen to ring it for a contestant. Cowell is also a judge on the sister show Britain’s Got Talent and smashed the golden buzzer for a father-son duo who sang an original song “about how lucky we are to have what we have.”
Looks like for all his documented hard-assery, Simon Cowell is actually a big old softie with a special place in his heart for super inspirational dads.
