Fast and Furious Animated Show Does One Thing the Movies Couldn’t

'Spy Racers' looks like it will bring the focus back to family and cars.

“I don’t have friends, I got family.”

This quote by Dom Toretto (Vin Diesel) in Furious 7 has become a motto for the entire Fast & Furious franchise, as all eight movies have been about Dom building his own “family” that stands together in good times and bad. But while family has always been the central theme of the series, in a way, the mature nature of the movies have made it so they aren’t actually family movies at all. But that might all change with Fast & Furious: Spy Racers, a new animated Netflix series that looks to make the franchise accessible for kids.

Spy Racers will focus on Dom’s cousin Tony, a teen who ends up following in his older cousin’s footsteps when he and his friends are recruited by the government to join a high-end racing competition in order to help take down the corrupt crime organization that is secretly running the whole operation. The trailer doesn’t actually show any of the characters but it does show what fans have come to expect from the franchise: cars racing in unexpected places. And while Dom isn’t slated to be in the show, Diesel is one of Spy Racers‘ executive producers.

This is great news for dads, as Spy Racers will allow you to introduce your kid to this totally badass universe without traumatizing your kid. And based on the trailer, it looks like the show will still be totally badass, as the animated medium could take the extreme car stunts to the next level.

Fast & Furious: Spy Racers will debut globally on Netflix later this year.
