Everything Is Not Awesome in ‘Lego Movie 2’ Trailer

It's up to Emmet to fix everything.

It looks like our favorite brick heroes, Wyldstyle, Emmet, Batman and Unikitty are in intergalactic trouble in the latest trailer for The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part. In the five years that have passed in both our world and theirs since The Lego Movie, their world has been reduced to a dusty Mad Max-esque wasteland. Emmet (Chris Pratt) is still as cheery as ever, but Wyldstyle (Elizabeth Banks) warns him to toughen up.

That warning goes unheeded and because of Emmet’s actions, a new alien villain named General Mayhem (Stephanie Beatriz) kidnaps Wyldstyle, Unikitty and Batman and brings them to the evil, yet sugary sweet Queen Watevra Wa-Nabi (Tiffany Haddish). This Queen and her minions are built out of LEGO Duplos, and it seems like this new world is going to be very pink and “girly.”

Emmet has a new buddy to go on this epic rescue mission with. His name is Rex Dangervest. Dangervest (also voiced by Pratt) is a galaxy defender, archeologist, cowboy and raptor trainer, which is a hilarious nod to Pratt’s other roles in The Magnificent Seven, Guardians of the Galaxy and Jurassic Park. The archeologist bit might be teasing Pratt and the rumors that he’ll be Indiana Jones in the next Spielberg movie. Dangervest even has a raptor and a plant accompanying his o this journey!

It seems like The Lego Movie 2 is going to use this new planet and Dangervest to talk about gender stereotypes and toxic masculinity. When Emmet reunites with Wyldstyle in space, she asks him if he’s drawn on a fake beard.

The Lego Movie 2 is in theaters February 8, 2019.
