Between announcements of a Moana-themed Epcot attraction and a Lizzie McGuire reboot, Disney’s D23 convention is giving fans plenty of juicy details. Included in the excitement is a first look at Emma Stone as Cruella de Vil in Disney’s upcoming Cruella film. From the looks of the photo, the famous villain will see a modernized – and just plain badass – interpretation.
The official Disney Twitter account shared a photo of Stone, who’s hardly recognizable as Cruella. The 30-year-old actress sports the characters signature half-white half-back hairstyle, but with an updated wardrobe. Instead of a long fur coat and slinky black dress, Stone wears a black leather jacket with checkered sleeves. “Here’s your first look at Emma Stone as Cruella de Vil in Disney’s Cruella. The film, also starring Emma Thompson, Paul Walter Hauser, and Joel Fry, comes to theaters May 28, 2021. #D23Expo,” Disney wrote along with the photo.
In the same vein as the 2014 film Maleficent, Cruella will be a closer look into the life of Cruella de Vil, the evil puppy-killer who originated in 1961’s 101 Dalmatians. Cruella was last played by Glenn Close in the 1996 adaptation of 101 Dalmatians.
Fans on Twitter are reeling from the big reveal, with many saying the film looks inspired by Tim Burton. One fan even mused: “Are we sure Thats not Emma Stone as Helena Bonham Carter as Cruella?” Many are also comparing Stone to Close’s interpretation of the villain, saying she’ll never be able to top the iconic performance. But even from one photo, it seems like they’ll be very different movies. So let’s give Emma a chance, okay?!
