Elton John is Giving Up Touring to Focus on Parenting

"There's no contest. I'd rather be with my children than still be playing shows."

Earlier this week, music legend Elton John announced that he will finally hang up his considerably glittery shoes. The 70-year-old singer explained that he wanted to spend more time with his family, as he is currently raising two sons Elijah, 5, and Zachary, 7, with his husband, David Furnish. Elton says he will close out his career with a three-year, 300 show farewell tour, which will begin in September.

“There’s no contest. I’d rather be with my children than still be playing shows,” John told ABC News’ Robin Roberts in an interview. “It’s a very easy decision to make.”

Elton John has been touring since he was only 17 years old and he acknowledges that, in a way, being on the road has been one of the most consistent aspects of his adult life. Now that he is married and has started a family of his own, however, the rock and roll icon says he would like to leave that part of his life behind so he can focus more on his role as father and husband.

“We had children and had changed our lives and in 2015 we sat down with their school schedule and we said I’m going to miss too much of this,” he told Anderson Cooper.

Like many people, John was forced to re-examine his priorities after becoming a parent. John explained the decision was an easy one, as he loves his husband and sons dearly and wants to spend as much time with them as possible. Well, as soon as he’s done playing 300 shows around the world for the next three years.

“Our boys came into our life at a late time,” John said. “I’ve never … experienced anything like it, being a father.”
