Yep, Elon Musk and Grimes Changed The Name of Their Baby

There's good reasoning behind the new name.

GETTY

Tesla CEO and SpaceX founder Elon Musk recently had a new baby with long time girlfriend and out-there pop star Grimes. This is not his first child but is his first with Grimes. Earlier in May, the couple welcomed their first child who they named X Æ A-12 Musk. The name choice immediately sent the internet into a much-memed tailspin, as the wacky choice of the couple was just about as on-brand as could be.

One of the major pieces of speculation about A-12 was whether or not his name would even be legally binding, as California state law only allows names to use English language characters (basically, the alphabet.) There was also much speculation about what the name meant: X is an unknown variable, Æ is AI, which Musk is obsessed with, and is pronounced Ash, and A-12 is the precursor to the couple’s favorite aircraft, which has no weapons, or defense mechanisms, but is quite fast. The “A” stands for Grimes’s favorite song, Archangel.

But now, according to Grimes herself, she and her partner have changed the name to stand in accordance with California law. After an Instagram user commented on one of her photos asking if she changed the name of A-12, Grimes responded with the new spelling: “X Æ A-Xii,” explaining that they went for Roman numerals and that she thinks it looks better that way anyway.
