Ed Sheeran and Cherry Seaborn Announce the Birth of Baby Lyra

Congrats!

Ed Sheeran is officially a dad! The singer just announced that his wife Cherry Seaborn has given birth to a girl, Lyra Antarctica Seaborn Sheeran, and they’re “completely in love with her.” News broke that the pair was expecting just a few weeks ago, since they’ve been able to hide the pregnancy a bit more easily due to the pandemic. Earlier today, Sheeran posted an adorable picture of two baby socks on Instagram and he relayed the news in a caption, writing, “Ello! A quick message from me as I have some personal news that I wanted to share with you… Last week, with the help of an amazing delivery team, Cherry gave birth to our beautiful and healthy daughter – Lyra Antarctica Seaborn Sheeran. We are completely in love with her. Both mum and baby are doing amazing and we are on cloud nine over here. We hope that you can respect our privacy at this time. Lots of love and I’ll see you when it’s time to come back, Ed x.” Sheeran had previously announced that he would be taking a hiatus from music in December to “travel, write and read,” and now we can pretty much see the real reason why.

Speaking of reading, one theory is that baby Lyra’s name comes from Philip Pullman’s series, His Dark Materials, whose protagonist is named Lyra. Vulture has pointed out that Ed Sheeran tweeted in 2015 that His Dark Materials was one of “the best books I’ve ever read.” Just a coincidence? Well, whether that’s the inspiration for the name or not, congratulations to the happy family. Maybe we can expect some dad music from him pretty soon?
