During an interview with late night host Jimmy Kimmel, actor Donald Glover broke down how he landed the role of the smooth-talking Lando Calrissian in the upcoming film Solo: A Star Wars Story before revealing to the audience that the first toy he can remember getting was actually a Star Wars action figure sculpted in the likeness of Billy Dee Williams, who played Lando in The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.
Glover admitted to Kimmel that his dad is actually a pretty huge Star Wars fan. So one can imagine that it’s pretty surreal for him to be assuming such a critical role in the franchise. On top of playing an iconic character in a Star Wars movie, Glover writes and stars in the hit FX series Atalanta and has garnered critical acclaim as a recording artist rapping and singing under the stage name Childish Gambino. He’s also a standup. His recent music video “This is America” went massively and understandably viral. He is, in short, one of the coolest dudes in the Galaxy.
No surprise then that he was looking up to Billy Dee Williams all along.
If early reviews of Solo are to be taken at face value, Glover kills it as Calrissian. How did he figure out how to play the role? Well, the OG Calrissian gave him some guidance — nothing too complicated, just “be charming.” Glover can do that. Hell, he does it constantly.
Solo: A Star wars Story hits theatres on May 25th.
