DMX’s Cover of ‘Rudolph the Rednose Reindeer’ is Modern Christmas Classic

The song proves that hip-hop and Christmas music should team up a lot more often.

DMX may not be the first person that comes to mind when you think of Christmas music but X really does give it to ya on this catchy cover of ‘Rudolph the Rednose Reindeer’.

The New York rapper first showed off his viral remix of ‘Rudolph’ back in 2012 when he was asked to freestyle his own version of the beloved Christmas song for New York’s Power 105.1 FM. The video quickly went viral and has been viewed over four million times but now DMX has released his official version of ‘Rudolph’ that is available on Spotify, making it the perfect new addition to your carefully-curated Christmas music playlist.

The track is equal parts catchy and fun, as DMX lends his iconic voice to tell the story of Rudolph and his nose so bright. The cover follows the basic melody of Rudolph but adds a hip-hop beat that adds some much-needed aggression to a genre that skews sentimental and soft. And, like any great Christmas song, DMX’s ‘Rudolph’ is not too long, coming in at just under two minutes so you won’t get sick of it by the time it’s over.

Despite being the most popular music genre of the 21st century, hip-hop has very little to show for when it comes to Christmas music. There have been a few hits, like Kanye’s ‘Christmas in Harlem’, Run DMC’s ‘Christmas in Hollies’, and Eazy-E’s ‘Merry Mothafuckin’ Xmas’ but for the most part, hip-hop and Christmas music just haven’t mixed. DMX’s dope as hell rendition of Rudolph proves that Christmas music could use a whole lot more hip-hop and, hopefully, one Christmas we will all get to celebrate the most wonderful time of the year with a LudaChristmas album that the world never even knew it needed.
