DJ Khaled isn’t one to shy away from doting on his son, Asahd. He buys him dope matching suits, he throws him absolutely epic first birthday parties, and regularly posts heartfelt messages about him. Today, the superproducer dropped the announcement video for his upcoming 11th studio album and the entire thing doubles as a touching letter to Asahd. In the clip, Khaled discusses the many ways that fatherhood has changed him and explains that his album will be titled Father of Asahd. It’s a bit weird, but it’s worth the watch.
“Bless up,” Khaled says as the video opens with clips of his son Asahd “dancing” to music and trying to get a shirt off of a hanger by aggressively shaking the whole thing; basically, he’s just doing baby things. “I have an important message for you. It’s a message about the master key of master keys. I’m talking about love.”
Set to the score of Forrest Gump, the rest of the video is essentially a montage of home movies featuring Khaled and Asahd. Khaled goes on to talk about the ways that the love from his own parents taught him how to “tell right from wrong,” “hustle,” and be “self-made.”
“Now I’m grateful for the ones who’s coming after me, my son Asahd,” says Khaled in the video. “He is my legacy, my love, my lion.” (Asahd means “lion” in Arabic.)
About halfway through the montage, Khaled talked about how he strives to be a person who can support his son through any circumstance, but how in turn, Ashad has actually been the person giving him purpose:“When Asahd smiles at me, it’s God smiling at me,” said Khaled. “The power of love did that.”
Khaled saved his most poignant piece of wisdom for the very end, however: “Here’s a major key. Our children give us the ultimate name, the greatest title, the highest honor,” said Khaled. “My son has given me my new name, “Father of Asahd,” and today, that’s what I’m naming my new album.”
