One woman got a horrifying surprise when she decided to pick her infant daughter up early from daycare one day. In a live Q&A with Slate, the mom revealed that she caught the childcare provider breastfeeding her baby.
“When I got to the area of the house where my daughter was, I about fell over. The daycare provider was NURSING MY BABY!” she wrote to journalist Daniel Mallory Ortberg on February 19. “[She] said that she was saving my baby from chemicals I was trying to force into her body and I should thank her for doing it all these months!”
The single mom, who explained that she chose to formula-feed her adopted daughter after she had trouble lactating, noted that the home daycare worker had previously criticized her decision not to breastfeed with comments like, “‘You feed her that slop?'”
Emphasizing that her daughter absolutely won’t be returning to the daycare, the mom asked Ortberg for additional advice on how to handle the situation so it doesn’t happen to any other parents’ children.
The Slate writer was shocked, responding, “Oh my GOD. If this isn’t worth reporting her to a supervising agency, I don’t know what is… This is a huge breach of trust, a total violation.”
Ortberg went on to urge the woman to take action, whether legally or simply on social media. He wrote, “The whole point of providing daycare for working parents is saying, ‘You can trust me to keep your children safe and well-cared for, and I will act according to your wishes in your absence,’ not ‘As soon as you walk out the door, I’m going to raise your child how I see fit.'”
