Vince Gilligan Reveals Two of the ‘Breaking Bad’ Characters Returning in ‘El Camino’

The film will focus on Jesse Pinkman, but inept criminal duo Skinny Pete and Badger will also be back.

When even the existence of a movie is as much of a secret as that of El Camino, the Breaking Bad spin-off film is, you can expect details about the characters and plot to be just as closely held. Thankfully, a new cover story in The Hollywood Reporter built around interviews with writer and director Vince Gilligan and star Aaron Paul is giving us a lot to think about.

There are some interesting details about the genesis and production of the film, shot over 50 days in many of the same New Mexico locations seen in the show. And we do know that it focuses on Jesse Pinkman, newly freed from the compound seen in “Felina.”

The one glorious nugget of information that did drop in the story is that there will be “more than ten familiar characters” from the series returning to this film, Albequerque’s most inept criminal masterminds—Skinny Pete (who we suspected was coming back thanks to the video announcement) and Badger—are two of them.

This is awesome news. While there’s more than enough reasons to have faith in Gilligan after five seasons of Better Call Saul, a spin-off series that quickly found its own voice inside the Breaking Bad universe, hearing that, as THR put it, the “Beavis and Butt-Head of the greater Albuquerque meth community” are coming back for the movie means October 11 can’t come soon enough.

The duo appears throughout the series—along with Schrader’s partner Gomez they’re the only minor characters to appear in all five seasons—and their rambling conversations served as much-needed comic relief on one of the most intense shows ever made.

Every time we learn something about the movie, we’re naturally left wondering about what we don’t know. This time around, the obvious question is who are the other eight-plus characters?

Your guess is as good as ours, but Bob Odenkirk’s ethically challenged attorney Saul Goodman is a good bet, as is Huell Babineaux, his loyal henchman.

With so little to go on, we’re left wondering. Hopefully a new trailer for the film, due to premiere this Sunday during the Emmys, answers some more questions with footage from the actual film.
