On Sunday, the Chicago Cubs lost to the LA Dodgers 4-1, putting themselves in an 0-2 hole and seriously damaging their chances of becoming consecutive World Series champions. But, while the game was a major gut punch for most Cubs fans, there was one moment that nearly overshadowed it: During the game, legendary Cubs superfan Bill Murray helped married couple Robbie Schloss and Kirsten Barrish Schloss deliver the news that they were expecting their first child.
In his classically understated deadpan, Murray let the couples’ parents in on the big news by pointing at them and saying, “I’ve got news for you. You’re gonna be grandparents.” Coming from anyone else, that might seem a bit underwhelming. But from Murray, it could not be more appropriate. The video was posted on Robbie’s Instagram, where it has received more than 4,000 views.
At this point, Bill Murray is almost as famous for being a die-hard Cubs fan as he is for being one of the funniest humans to ever exist. Like all Cubs fans, he was a loyal fan who endured a great deal of suffering as the team waited 108 years between World Series wins. Since the Cubs won the World Series last October, Murray has been in full celebration mode, appearing on SNL with several Cubs’s players, accepting an ESPY on behalf of the team, and now letting people know they’re going to be grandparents at playoff games. It’s never been a better time to be America’s cool, slightly detached uncle. And it’s safe to say that Robbie and Kirsten are riding a gravy train with biscuit wheels.
