According To The Latest Surveys, Americans Are Increasingly Cool With Gay Parents

New research from The U.S. Department Of Health and Human Services published in the National Health Statistics Reports finds that men and women are more supportive of gay and lesbian couples’ rights to adopt children than ever before. More millennials seem to be driving this progressive shift in parenting views, and depending how you feel about it, it’s yet another reason to love or fear young people.

The data, which was obtained from about 45,000 people between the ages of 15 and 44 in 2002, 2006–2010, and 2011–2013 as a part of the National Survey of Family Growth, showed that the number of adults who agreed that, “Gay or lesbian adults should have the right to adopt children,” increased from 55.4 percent of women and 46.9 percent of men in 2002, to 65.6 percent of women and 55 percent of men in 2006–2010. The most recent numbers are even more clear cut: 74.8 percent of women and 67.5 percent of men in 2011–2013 now believe in the rights of gay and lesbian couples to adopt.

Young people in 2011-13, specifically between the ages 15 and 24, favored same sex adoption in 83 percent of women and 75 percent of men. At this rate, the number of people in support of everyone’s right to parent will be closer to 100 percent by the time your kid asks you why they don’t get to have two dads. And, considering your personal level of awesome, can you blame them?

The studies did not explore why these attitudes are shifting, but here’s a novel theory: Parents need as much help as they can get. When you’re trying to figure how the dog turned blue or whether or not your toddler is a sociopath, do you really care if the guy who knows the answer is in love with another guy?
