The second season of the popular Disney Channel show Andi Mack is going to do something never seen before on Disney: feature the first-ever coming out storyline.
According to a report from Deadline, tomorrow night’s one-hour season premiere will feature Cyrus Goodman, the titular Andi’s best friend, realize his gay and subsequently comes out to his friends and family.
Andi Mack is a show about a 13-year-old girl whose life is changed when her older sister Bex returns home and tells her the truth: she’s not Andi’s older sister, she’s her mom. The show was an immediate hit with viewers and averaged a solid 1.39 million viewers per episode in its first season.
It is currently unclear how exactly Cyrus’s coming out story will ultimately play out but, regardless, it’s a massive moment for Disney shows. Even 10 years ago, a storyline like this being featured on a popular and beloved show would have been almost inconceivable. Shows like Degrassi could casually depict gay characters or same-sex couples onscreen but that’s because they skewed towards an older audience and were expected to push the boundaries of progress.
Before this, the closest Disney ever came to LGBTQIA representation was a lesbian couple on Good Luck Charlie back in 2014. But even then it was only for one episode only and the characters were onscreen for about two minutes. It’s great to see a featured storyline about homosexuality on an already-popular Disney Channel show; hopefully, it will be a regular occurrence from now on.
