Parents may still be back-to-school shopping but Amazon’s moving on to the holidays. This week, the online retailer released an early list of its Top 100 Holiday Toys. And while it’s unclear whether the selections are based on sales, popularity, or simply the wild predictions of Amazon’s tastemakers, it’s a solid, albeit un-numbered roundup of heavy-hitters that you’ll want to use as a holiday shopping cheat sheet.
Much like last year, robotics, STEM, and tech toys take center stage. Sphero’s popular Cars 3 Ultimate Lightning McQueen app-controlled car runs at the front of the pack (or at least in the top 25) along with Anki’s Cosmo robot, LEGO’s BOOST, Osmo‘s Genius Kit, and the new augmented reality Play-Doh Touch set. Anki’s Overdrive Fast And Furious AI race cars also made the cut.
While there are a few holdovers from last year’s group including Hatchimals, the 3Doodler, Codenames, and Barbie Dream-house, the list is also loaded with a bunch of hot new releases unveiled at this year’s Toy Fair. A few that jump out include the Justice League Batmobile, Roller Coaster Challenge, and Crayola’s new virtual designer Fashion Superstar. McLaren’s new sexy pint-sized 570s push car is also in the mix.
And, of course, as no top toy list is complete without something that rains down soft-tipped fury, two new NERF blasters are included: the Nerf Modulus Regulator and new Nerf Nitro, which shoots cars instead of darts.
Admittedly, the release of this Top 100 feels a little early for Amazon. And it’s hard to imagine it will be retailer’s final say; expect a definitive numbered list to drop closer to the holidays. That said, for parents eager to get an early jump on their holiday shopping, it offers a nice glimpse into which toys parents will be throwing punches for later this year.
