Amazon Offers Discounted Prime Membership to Customers on Medicaid

Families enrolled in Medicaid are now eligible for Amazon Prime for just $5.99 per month.

Yesterday, Amazon announced that it would be extending its discounted Prime membership to recipients of Medicaid. That would mean 73 million Americans who are enrolled in the government health care program would now be able to receive free two-day shipping on their Amazon purchases for just $5.99 per month. According to the announcement posted on Amazon’s blog, anyone who is currently on Medicaid and have a valid EBT or Medicaid card qualify for the discounted Prime membership. Once someone has qualified, they are eligible to renew their discounted membership for the next four years and have the option to cancel at any time.

This is a huge win for low-income Americans who struggle to make ends meet, providing relief not just on shipping costs but also potentially saving busy parents the time it takes to go to the store. The massive shipping company hopes that the convenience of shopping on Amazon will help parents who simply don’t have the time or access to get what they need from “traditional brick-and-mortar stores.”

Along with free two-day shipping, a Prime membership also gives members access to tons of features, including Prime Video, Prime Music, Prime Photos, Prime Reading, Audible Channels for Prime, Amazon First Reads, and Twitch Prime.

This new deal comes on the heels of other Amazon efforts to make it easier for Americans to access healthcare. The online retail behemoth recently began working with major players in the shipping and healthcare industries to identify ways to help transform the healthcare industry to help benefit low-income communities. There are even reports that the company is planning to sell pharmaceutical prescriptions on their site.
