How A Photo Of A Guy With His Kids Can Send Someone Through Nursing School

The following article was produced with our partners at Johnson & Johnson.

“What is a nurse journalist?” you’ve almost definitely never asked yourself. Neither had Jamie Davis, until he found himself with a nursing degree on top of his journalism degree and realized that nurses are needed in nearly every walk of life — not just the hospital. These days, Davis uses what he learned as a nurse and EMT to report on issues relevant to both through his wildly popular (among nurses and EMTs, anyway) podcast, The Nursing Show.

Davis’ career path is pretty unique but, given how in demand nurses are, he doesn’t feel it should be. That’s why he’s donating the following photo through Johnson & Johnson’s Donate A Photo app. For every shot users submit through the app, the company gives one dollar to the photographer’s cause of choice.* In this case, that’s the Foundation of the National Student Nurses’ Association, which provides scholarships to guys like Davis.

“Change is possible. It comes along in different points in your life, and it’s never too late to take advantage of those opportunities when they present themselves,” says Davis, and he’d like to see more people inspired to chart their own course the way he did — so he started with his kids.

“I was a stay-at-home dad for a while and went back to school to get my nursing degree. My kids spent about 3 and a half years watching me study nonstop. I always had a textbook open while cooking dinners and taking care of them. At the same time I was doing all this, my wife worked full-time. It was really an opportunity for me to model being a good student for my kids, which is something parents don’t often get to do. This picture is the culmination of that when I received my nursing pin as a new RN.”

“Today, my oldest 2 are in college, and my youngest is a senior in high school who just got accepting into the college of her choice. They all worked really hard and have seen the benefits of being students working really diligently towards a goal.”

*Johnson & Johnson has curated a list of trusted causes, and you can donate a photo to one cause, once a day. Each cause will appear in the app until it reaches its goal, or the donation period ends. If the goal isn’t reached, the cause will still get a minimum donation.
