Scrambling to plan a vacation sucks, but with life and work and the kid, it’s understandable. Don’t make it worse by scrambling to find money, too. There are plenty of simple ways to squirrel away cash without even noticing, but the simplest is to just take your entire year-end bonus and put it in a new savings account. Then, figure out the cost of whatever vacation you want to take and determine the difference between your bonus and the total. Next, divide that number by the number of paychecks you’ll receive between now and when you want to leave. Finally, set up an automatic transfer so, on payday, that amount goes into the savings account with the bonus money. And all that isn’t enough to get the family to Disney World, sell the couch.
