When You Should Worry About Your Kid’s Cholesterol
Discovering that your cholesterol is an issue and it’s time to back off the bacon is usually one of those rights of passage into middle age, but there are several scenarios where you might want to get your kid checked (even at this age). The two biggest red flags are a family history of high cholesterol or any propensity for obesity, and the risks in either case are the same as they are for people your age: too much low density lipoprotein (“bad” cholesterol) builds up as plaque in the blood vessels and leads to heart disease. If the kid’s at risk, that process has already begun and an early intervention through diet and exercise can mitigate the need for drug therapies later in life. After all, a life without bacon is better than a life on Lipitor (but just barely).
