West Elm Just Launched a Kids Line and It’s Awesome

Your home doesn't have to get ugly when you have a kid.

Kids furniture needs to straddle the very fine line between functional and fun: It should be playful enough for children, but good-looking enough that it can live in adult rooms. Now, West Elm has launched its first kids collection, so there’s no need to give up midcentury design just because you have a child. These pieces do all the things that kids furniture needs to do — they’re safe, functional, enchanting for kids — while also being thoughtfully made, neutral in color, and easy on the eyes. Many of the 2000 pieces in the new line are also organic, Fair Trade certified, or Greenguard. These six pieces stood out in what is already a standout collection.

A nursery rocker that would look every bit as handsome in your living room, this one is covered in chenille tweed. The frame is made from kiln-dried solid and engineered hardwood. Best of all, the rockers can be removed and replaced with stationary legs.

Storage is an issue for every parent, as stuffed animals and puzzles and Legos proliferate and multiply. This adorable woven giraffe is not only a handy solution, but each one is handcrafted from wicker and abaca rope, so it brings warmth into a room like no toy trunk can. It's also ageless enough that it can go from storing onesies and toys to teen and grown-up stuff.

You can gaze at your baby all day long thanks to the clear slats on this crib, which is made from sustainably sourced wood. The crib itself is made from kiln-dried solid and engineered wood with clear acrylic slats. The mattress platform is adjustable, and the crib converts into a toddler bed.

A glorious domain where little beings dream big dreams: This playhouse has a lightweight pine frame and hardy cotton cover. And it has fasteners that let the door and the flaps be secured.

Function, but make it fashion. This gorgeous step stool helps kids reach new heights, quite literally. It's made of solid wood, and has side handles so it's easy to move around. The weight limit is 50 pounds.

An easel that actually looks as good as your child's creations. This wood easel has a white eraser board on one side and a black chalkboard on the other side. It's easy to assemble and has a tray for art supplies (sold separately).

Rainy days have nothing on this fun hopscotch rug, which has play built right into it. Not only is it fun and clever and made of soft, washable 100% cotton, it can also pull a whole room together with its minimal palette and Franz Kline vibes.
