If you happen to be a hot sleeper, then you know how hard it can be to get a good night’s sleep. You toss. You turn. You beg your partner to lower the thermostat. Yes, fans and cooling pillows can help. But, according to Dr. Chris Winter, neurologist, sleep scientist, and author of The Sleep Solution, one of the best ways to prevent overheating in bed is by purchasing better bedsheets.
“There are lots of hot sleepers out there that don’t understand why they struggle at night and how much a good set of sheets can help them,” Winter says. “Once you understand the science behind why you sleep hot then you can start to solve the problem.” (Now, night sweats can be a symptom of other issues, so if you do wake up sweating in the middle of the night, you should see a doctor just in case).
According to Dr. Winter, in a typical 24-hour cycle humans’ temperatures rise and fall in fairly predictable patterns. Unfortunately, most people’s bodies are at their highest temperature right at bedtime and require several hours to drop to optimal sleep levels.
The solution, therefore, is to hijack the system by surrounding yourself in a cooling environment. “A good set of cooling sheets will wick moisture away from your body, actually pull cooler air through their fabric, and help your body begin to shed the excess heat you need for a good night’s sleep,” says Winter. If you’re a hot sleeper, he recommends cooling your room to around 65 degrees at bedtime (actually the standard temperature for optimal sleep), sleeping in as little clothing as possible, and crawling between one of these sets of cooling sheets.
Bedgear Ver-Tex Performance Sheets
These sheets are hypoallergenic, cool to the touch and, per Winter, shed heat at an amazing rate. Their cubic feet per minute rating is ten times higher than normal cotton sheets — in other words, air easily moves through them. Best of all they are held in place by a large power band encircling the bottom sheet to ensure no loose corners at night. Each set comes with a bottom and top sheet plus two pillowcases, all of which are machine washable and available in multiple colors and sizes.
Deepsport Cooling Bed Sheets
Deepsport cooling bed sheets are hypoallergenic, antibacterial, sweat-wicking and breathable. They’re the only bedsheets approved by the FDA to be used as a medical device in the treatment of atopic dermatitis, eczema, and psoriasis, which makes sense given Deepsport’s history manufacturing hospital bedding. Machine-washable and smooth to the touch, these sheets are made in the USA and come in a variety of different sizes.
Sheex Original Performance Sheet Set
The brainchild of two former female college basketball coaches, Sheex are made of the same performance fabrics that athletes use to regulate their temperature during competition, so they have superior moisture wicking capabilities, high breathability, and a soft to the touch “They are perfect for most people suffering from night sweats,” says Winter. Sheex sheets breathe 50 percent better than normal cotton sheets and are a bit oversized so you are never struggling to stay covered. They’re machine-washable and come in a variety of colors.
