Yet Another ‘Jungle Book’ Is Coming But At Least The Trailer Looks Awesome

Disney has remade The Jungle Book twice already — a 2003 version with the kid from The Sixth Sense and a 1994 version starring Biff’s nondescript hoverboard cronie from Back To Future 2 — and neither of them even remotely improved on 1967 animated original. But maybe the third time is a charm. The trailer for next year’s remake — helmed by Iron Man director Jon Favreau and starring Scarlett Johansson, Idris Elba, Bill Murray, Christopher Walken, and Ben Kingsley (you read that right) — just dropped, and it features some mind-bending effects work that would make Tony Stark proud.

Unfortunately for parents everywhere, this version is going to make being raised by wolves pretty attractive to kids. While Mowgli is played by a relative newcomer, his panther-mentor is voiced by Kingsley and best bear buddy Baloo is voiced by Murray. Who wouldn’t ditch their dad to hang with those guys in the jungle? Even your wife is liable to turn on you if you perk up too much at Johansson’s python, Kaa. Still, this appears to be the first take on the classic that might capture a kid’s imagination even better than a cartoon.

The Disney adaptation isn’t the only upcoming Jungle Book revamp. Warner Bros. has thrown its hat into the ring with Jungle Book: Origins. It will hit theaters in 2017 with a predominantly British cast that includes Lord Of The Rings stars Andy Serkis and Cate Blanchett to discover once and for all exactly how much Hollywood can milk from the same old teats.
