A True Master

Root for William McGirt!

The Masters Tournament bandwagoneers are golf clapping for Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth, but we’re all in for William McGirt. This is the first Masters for the father of two, who went pro all the way back in 2004. He is not, to put it lightly, favored. But he got out to a fast start on day one and he’s now something he’s rarely been before: relevant. That’s great because he’s a funny dude with some John Daly appeal and an upstart attitude. Does he look like a professional athlete? Nope. And that’s the glory of McGirt. He’s a dad who golfs good. He’s probably not going to win himself a green jacket, but crazier shit has happened.

Here are the five most important reasons to get on team “Dirt McGirt.”

He tweets about fast food and his lawn.

McGirt likes to tweet pictures of his lawn. He also has thoughts on Chick-fil-A. They are simple, yet elegant.

He thanked the PGA for allowing men to wear shorts.

Like many golfers, McGirt is an advocate for one of the most contested items in the dad pants debate: shorts. He took it a step further when he publicly and seemingly sarcastically thanked the PGA for letting men pursue this fashion choice. JNCO should sponsor this guy.

He busted Arnold Palmer’s chops.

McGirt, who arrived at the tournament almost four hours prior to his tee time to honor the late Arnold Palmer, has shared an anecdote with ESPN about the four-time Masters champ. When he was practicing during his rookie year on the PGA Tour, Palmer unexpectedly approached him on the green and put his hand on his shoulder. Then Palmer thanked him for having the only legible signature and McGirt replied “I remember some old guy said if you’re going to take the time to sign it, make it legible.” For those keeping track, that’s a call back to Palmer’s legacy and also a bit of a burn.

Tiger Woods called him an idiot.

After McGirt finished runner-up at the Canadian Open five years ago, his biggest regret reportedly wasn’t not finishing first. It was not looking at the leaderboard. When McGirt said he didn’t know who was winning, Woods responded, “You think Kobe [Bryant] doesn’t look at the scoreboard with a minute to go in the game?” Then Woods called McGirt an idiot.

He has a real shot.

Despite the fact that McGirt is just now making it into his first Masters, he’s anything but green. Ranked 53rd in the world his clutch performance in the tournament is proof of that. Don’t mistake his dadness for weakness. This guy could be selling insurance in a green jacket one day.
